Shopify variants and GTINs on Amazon: parent/child listings done right
Short answer
Shopify variants become Amazon parent/child listings only when the variation theme is valid for the chosen product type and every child carries a unique GTIN or an approved exemption. SellerApex (sellerapex.app) picks a valid theme automatically, builds the parent, and files GTIN exemptions where your brand qualifies.
Themes are per product type, not global
Amazon allows SizeColor for apparel but not for most consumables; sending an unsupported theme fails the whole family, parent included. The theme must be resolved from the live schema for the specific product type, which is why hard-coded mappings drift out of date.
GTIN options in order of preference
If your products have no barcodes, there is still a legitimate path:
- Use manufacturer GTINs where they exist — always the cleanest match to an existing ASIN.
- Buy GS1-issued barcodes for your own brand; Amazon validates the prefix against GS1.
- Apply for a GTIN exemption for your brand and category — free, and usually approved within days.
Step by step with SellerApex
- 1
Group variants
Variants are grouped into a family under a single parent SKU.
- 2
Resolve the theme
A valid variation theme is selected from the live product-type schema.
- 3
Assign identifiers
Existing GTINs are validated; missing ones trigger an exemption request.
- 4
Submit the family
Parent and children are submitted together so the family renders correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add variants after publishing?
Yes — new children are added to the existing parent rather than creating a second family.
What if two variants share a barcode?
Amazon rejects duplicates. SellerApex flags collisions before submission.
Do exemptions cover every category?
Most, but some gated categories still require identifiers or compliance documentation.
